Has it really been a year already ?!

Has it really been a year already ?!
Wow the time has just flown by with lots of activity !
My last post was about how disappointed I was having to leave Pixie Glassworks . Well this past spring and summer saw me completing my very own new studio !

Yes that is me! Insulating the walls ! I also did all the drywall , muding ,taping ugh ...sanding and my favorite part Painting

and I didn't stop there ! I also tiled the floors and then installed a exhaust ventilation system .

That took the whole of the summer ! I never really believed I would have my own studio ! Definitely feel accomplished !
Now for the really FUN stuff

It has been 4 months now that I have been in my OWN !!! studio and although we have had some pretty cold nights here in Alberta as long as it doesn't dip down below -15 C ; I am still able to work outside comfortably with the little industrial heater that is mounted on the wall !
Making myself owl friends and for my dread head friends Dread beads ! This year is going to be the BEST by far so excited to see what is going to come out of the kiln next !
Hopefully I will have a moment to keep my blog up to date !

i wished upon a ...

Where has the time gone ? It is February 1st 2012!! and finally I am back to document my journey .
So where have I been this past 9 months ...no i didn't have another baby
....PHEW !!
At the end of April 2011 I received a phone call from one of my favorite glass artists in
Edmonton, Pixie Glassworks . They were looking for a apprentice to come and learn and work with them. I was thrilled to say the least it was like a wish come true ! I started to go to Tom & Irja's garage weekly it took awhile but I started to get the hang of blowing the aromatherapy pendants that they are known for ; not perfectly yet but close .In July they got the lease for a new shop in Edmonton and summer was spent preparing the studio. I kept at it until October at which time I was really exhausted from the sheer amount of work . Being a mom to 6 kids , taking care of the house and husband and working part-time evenings and weekends at the Home Depot and then the Pixie's every free moment I just ran out of steam ! Something I wanted to do so badly just wasn't going to work for me . I realized I was no longer making stuff I wanted and all the drawings in my sketchbook had been pushed aside and so with deep sadness and a few tears I said good bye to my dream job at Pixie Glassworks .

Reflections

It seems that the long winter really drained my desire to write about the creative goings on in my life . But as the snow starts to melt and the new year unfolds I find myself full of thoughts of sharing . With so much suffering and destruction with recent events and feeling quite helpless to do much ; I decided to look within my own community and how my art can help locally .
I believe we are as a society all responsible for the children in our community and what better charity to support locally then your Boys & Girls Club . Our Local Fort Saskatchewan Club is holding a Banquet and silent auction and with them in mind I created this set for there auction. Bold and colorful full of life which to me is a reflection of childhood. I am hoping the event is a huge success for the Boys & Girls Club as they offer so much to so many children everyday !

Something to hold on to !

What do you have in your pocket ? I carry a handful of glass beads . Sometimes I think they are just motivation to keep going or just to entertain me when I am bored . I love how they feel some smooth, some bumpy, some flat . When I am worried about something I use them to focus my thoughts to help me concentrate . Curious how something you can hide in the palm of your hand ,something small and that looks fragile can give me strength and make me believe that everything is under control ! I think a lot of you keep something in your pocket or at your desk . Something tactile that can be played with when we need to be amused . I love the idea of meditation beads ,to help focus during concentration or times of stress . I would have to admit that I use mine when I am sending Light and Love to family and friends I am thinking about so I guess they are a kind of modern day worry bead . So what do you carry in your pocket ... maybe you need some of these you can check them out here http://www.etsy.com/listing/59057969/handmade-glass-meditation-beads

It's Time

Was it not just yesterday that we were saying good bye to school lunches ,buses and teachers ? Ditching jeans and jackets for shorts and tanks pushing those hot sweaty sneakers to the back of the closet for the feel of bare feet in the long soft grass of summer ? Sleeping in late and heading to the park for a lazy dayof just playing in the sun, no worries, no problems, just friends and laughs and a few slurpees in the mix .
Where do all the good times go in the heat of the summer the magical days that never seem to end one blending into the next like the waves on the shore overlapping so smoothly one over the other . In the midst of all that leisure summer disappears and just this past week no longer is it light past the streetlights . Darkness falls before we are tired the days are starting to remind us that they to are tired of so much leisure . The signs of fall are now everywhere. The trees are being covered with yellow gold, school buses flashing lights, the smell of books crisp and new and I am just as excited as I was for summer . Time to start A New Year ! New hands to hold and stories to hear, friends to make and dreams to Imagine ! It's time to get back to school ! Hurray ! Time to make so much new stuff if you can just believe ....

Summer Reading Fun

When I was a young girl the long anticipated break for summer was a time to immerse myself in books. In summer I would spend days at the library . I would sit in the children's section the entire day and read cover to cover. I loved to read! I could escape in the pages to places I would never go. It was like having a holiday without leaving the library.I found friends on every page I turned
and adventures that most certainly always turned out fun . All that and I could be home by 6 pm; never alone but with a armload of adventures to keep me company! I do not get to the library much anymore but my love of a good book has not ended . These days my adventures are with my girls as I share with them the love of a good story. It is such a memorable time to sit and snuggle and read together ! Some great books to read with little girls are Butterfly Kisses, by Vicki Churchill, Stella by Marie Louse Gay, Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots ? by Carmela Lavigna Coyle, and our 2 year olds very favorite Russel the Sheep by Rob Scotton . If you are looking for a gift this summer for a book lover be sure to have a look at http://www.etsy.com/shop/sixbabygirls?section_id=6971429 for some beautiful bookmarks for that special person that loves a good read !

Iridescent Blue

I just love the look of glass and gemstone, and with my latest design I have incorporated a violet blue double diamond cut quartz with the iridescent glowing lampwork beads ! The dots on the glass beads are like opals shimmering and iridescent ! It is glorious to behold and the weight and size are just right . Quartz is used to cleanse focus and amplify energy levels in the body. It realigns and refocuses the body , mind, and spirit toward clear goals; beautiful and healing what a bonus !
